WEEK 10

Part 1

This week we were asked to look at the ECU library website and make a list of 10 useful functions on the site…

• ECU Referencing Guide - The library website allows students to access a copy of the ECU Referencing Guide at any time. This is very helpful for students who need to access this last minute in order to complete references etc.
• Library Catalogue – This allows students to locate items in the library and to find out more about them before hiring or going to the library.. it allows easy access to information regarding items kept in the library
• Online Databases – Allows students to access journal articles and databases online regarding particular topics and subjects
• Faculty Information – Provides students access to the different ECU faculties at any time
• Virtual Reference Collection – Links to many different sites regarding Associations and organisations, acronyms and abbreviations and dictionaries, thesauruses, calculators etc.
• Internet Search Tools – Gives a list of a range of recommended search engines to use when searching the internet.
• Multimedia Resources – Allows students or staff to ask for help regarding the use of multimedia equipment on each campus
• Document Delivery - Enables Edith Cowan University staff, higher degree and remote external students to place requests for loans or articles from other libraries and document supply services.
• Borrowing from the library – A step by step guide which informs students on how to borrow from the library
• The library website also has many informative links if students have any questions regarding library help.

Part 2

Our second task for this week was to visit the MEDline plus website – www.medlineplus.com and spend some time going through the health topics and drug information. We were then asked to use the search engine on a topic that we were interested in.

The disease that I chose was Haemochromatosis…
Although a lot of people have not heard of this disease it is actually life threatening when not treated. I chose this disease because I actually have it. It’s a blood disease that occurs when there is too much iron in the blood. It can also affect the major organs commonly the liver, where over time these organs can be destroyed or severely damaged if the disease is not treated.

This site is actually very helpful for people who need to find out more about certain diseases or health issues. The interactive tutorials provide many different links to different sites so that viewers can obtain more than one perspective on the information. Anyone would want to use this site, whether they have a disease themself or wish to find out about any disease due to a family illness or even if it’s for a school project. I personally found this site very helpful in finding out information regarding Haemochromatosis and I would definitely recommend it.

Our next task was to locate an online data base on another subject..
The subject I chose was Domestic violence towards women. The site I found which I thought was quite helpful on informing me on this topic was…
http://www.mayoclinic.com/invoke.cfm?id=WO00044

This site gave an overview on what happens in domestic abuse families. It outlines the different situations and reasons for it occurring. There is a section regarding “Power and Control” which outlines why people need to have authority over others. It also outlines the different stages and emotions that both the inflictor and victim go through. It gives advice on how to stop the abuse and what to do next.. I thought this website would be very helpful for families going through this issue and it gives a good insight as to what to expect and how to deal with the outcomes..
