MY CAR

WEEK 12

LECTURE 12:

Todays lecture was on social and ethical issues. Its about how to protect yourself and your PC when on the internet.
There are so many risks when surfing the net. who is watching you?

Things during the lecture which were spoken about were:

- risk of identity theft
- what the problems are (why is happens)
- people steal others works.
- academic misconduct
- privacy on the net
- security
- protecting yourself
- beware of attachments
- dont give out any PERSONAL information

Then the lecture was ended with a pop quiz.

we were asked to go to this site:
http://www.copyright.org.au/information
then we were top pick 5 different fact sheets, then we read through them.

my first one i picked was:
music, and performing arts- legal protection
this information sheet, talks about the protection and copy right issues.
its hard because when studying, a lot of ideas are thrown around. and ideas cant be protected. but this sheet talks about protection outline for other things.
copying ideas does NOT breach copy right.
The second information sheet was on - moral rights in the music and performing sector.

These rights were intorduced in 2000. Moral rights can not be sold.
There are many exceptions and infringements of moral rights.
Only indivdual creators of the copy right can gain moral rights.
The types of material that is covered by moral rights, includes: Literary, artistic, musical, dramatic, computer, cinematic.
The third information sheet: is an information sheet on choreographers. The person who creates the work. owns copy right to it. They also have moral rights in relation to their work.

The forth information site is on performers rights, you must get a performers permission to film, performers have co rights to the filming of the production, they also have moral rights.

The final information sheet is on music bands and whqat rights they have: they have the rights for three different elements of the song- the lyrics, the music, and the recording. All performers have rights to the recording. In this sector of music bands it is dificult when it comes to rights, expecially if someone leaves the band. for example Axel rose (lead singer of guns and roses) this is a big example of when rights of a band and their music went horribly wrong.

An overall view on teh information sheets, is that it explains clearly what the rights for each sector are. This is a very helpful site, it contains all legal information that we, as uni students need to know. Here is a print screen of one of the information sheets:

Our next task was to look at this site:
http://www.apra.com.au/music-users/online_mobile/online_mobile.asp

Then we are to report on what we know/ learnt aboput music:

- downloading music is FREE, and this is why teenagers like to down load their music, well why not? why would we want to pay for soemthing we could get for free!
- If music is continuosly downloaded, then artists and song writers are not gettin paid for their work.
- playing music on a website, is proven to make the net more appealing. But there is lots of copy right issues that music players on the internet must be aware of. Music downloading is not going to stop, so why dont they try a different outlook.

a scrren shot of the site:

Our next task is to devise a security plan.using these three sites to refer to:

http://netsecurity.about.com/

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/virus6.htm http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2100282,00.asp

To secure your web, and your computer you must do the following:

-Beware of un known email adresses, and attachments. if you are unsure what the document is about, or if it is from a suss and unknown source, do NOT open it, scan it throuhg a viruses scanner first.

- Dont go searching the web onto sites that seem dodgy. on these sites, you ussually get pop up adds and games, these are jsut hovering viruses.

- Make sure you install you computer with the latest virus scanner. This will automatically scan your computer for viruses.

- When using a chat room or service such as msn, make sure you do not click on any links sent to you that dont make sense. check with theperson that is sending you the item. If they dont know what its about do not let your computer receive it, and also let them know, so they themselves can check their computer for viruses.

READINGS:

The first reading is about how to protect your online privacy.
http://www.eff.org/wp/effs-top-12-ways-protect-your-online-privacy
it goes through 12 ways to keep your information private.
- do not give away personal information
-use cookie software
- keep an appropriate email address.
- dont go giving away personal information over the net
- you may be monitered at work, dont send emails that include personal and private information.

- beware of tricks on websites
- dont reply to emails that seem suss. aka spams
-be concious of the security on the web, or website
- make sure you have home computer security
-explore privacy policies

it tells us about some thigns that can happen:
- patents
- trade marks
-copy rights
- trade section protection comapny
- and computer software that can help protect your computer.

Week 11

LECTURE:
today in the lecture we learnt about data, infomation and knowledge we got a definition for them each which i am going to wright in here for me to remember in the future which is DATA: a fact of proposition INFOMATION: facts or data that have something in common KNOWLEDGE: knowing what had been learnt. all these are very important and they go well together. they all have a massive importace with each other and for them to each work they have to relate with the other two to make a system that is hole proof. we got some examples of each of them to make us see exactly what they are about and how to use each of them well. there was some stratagies for assignment work with using each and they showed us how to smothly bring them in to our reserching process's and how to use them to make our work the best it can be. i believe that this lecture brought everything we have learnt about data and search engines together because it gave us a insite into what is needed to make a assignemtn go together with the right steps.

TUTORIAL:
I looked on the internet to find a dictionary online that I could look up the words DATA, INFOMATION and KNOWLEDGE.
the site I use to look up words is www.dictionary.com from this site I found the words definitions
DATA:individual facts, statistics, or items of information: These data represent the results of our analyses. Data are entered by terminal for immediate processing by the computer.

INFOMATION: knowledge communicated or received concerning a particular fact or circumstance; news: information concerning a crime
KNOWLEDGE:acquaintance with facts, truths, or principles, as from study or investigation; general erudition: knowledge of many things.
this site was good because they also match what was inside my written dictionary.
2.as i didnt attend the lecture today i dont know about the graphical representation section i do intend to ask though to find out.
3. Understanding the relationship between data infomation and knowledge helps me as a university student becuaese each is important in there own way and when you put it all together it is more important they relate with each other and save us time when thinking of ideas.
4.i thought of some organisations that collect infomation from clients or the public. one of these is nova. they colelct infomation online to see how people respond to music they play and things they talk about for feedback. ECU is one they collect infomation about the teachers and units so they can see what is good and what can be improved. most companies will collect infomation from people who are members or people who do it volentarily this is so they can see how they are doing and what they can do to improve things.

READINGS:
Today the online readings were about the relationships between data infomation and knowledge. there sourse was the same as mine which was www.dictionary.com they looked at how they relate with each other to form one. they also had frequently asked questiond which was good because it was answering what i was thinking but couldnt ask because it was a website. the other reading was about literacy and infomation this had some questions to ask when thinkgin about this.

WEEK 10

Part 1

This week we were asked to look at the ECU library website and make a list of 10 useful functions on the site…

• ECU Referencing Guide - The library website allows students to access a copy of the ECU Referencing Guide at any time. This is very helpful for students who need to access this last minute in order to complete references etc.
• Library Catalogue – This allows students to locate items in the library and to find out more about them before hiring or going to the library.. it allows easy access to information regarding items kept in the library
• Online Databases – Allows students to access journal articles and databases online regarding particular topics and subjects
• Faculty Information – Provides students access to the different ECU faculties at any time
• Virtual Reference Collection – Links to many different sites regarding Associations and organisations, acronyms and abbreviations and dictionaries, thesauruses, calculators etc.
• Internet Search Tools – Gives a list of a range of recommended search engines to use when searching the internet.
• Multimedia Resources – Allows students or staff to ask for help regarding the use of multimedia equipment on each campus
• Document Delivery - Enables Edith Cowan University staff, higher degree and remote external students to place requests for loans or articles from other libraries and document supply services.
• Borrowing from the library – A step by step guide which informs students on how to borrow from the library
• The library website also has many informative links if students have any questions regarding library help.

Part 2

Our second task for this week was to visit the MEDline plus website – www.medlineplus.com and spend some time going through the health topics and drug information. We were then asked to use the search engine on a topic that we were interested in.

The disease that I chose was Haemochromatosis…
Although a lot of people have not heard of this disease it is actually life threatening when not treated. I chose this disease because I actually have it. It’s a blood disease that occurs when there is too much iron in the blood. It can also affect the major organs commonly the liver, where over time these organs can be destroyed or severely damaged if the disease is not treated.

This site is actually very helpful for people who need to find out more about certain diseases or health issues. The interactive tutorials provide many different links to different sites so that viewers can obtain more than one perspective on the information. Anyone would want to use this site, whether they have a disease themself or wish to find out about any disease due to a family illness or even if it’s for a school project. I personally found this site very helpful in finding out information regarding Haemochromatosis and I would definitely recommend it.

Our next task was to locate an online data base on another subject..
The subject I chose was Domestic violence towards women. The site I found which I thought was quite helpful on informing me on this topic was…
http://www.mayoclinic.com/invoke.cfm?id=WO00044

This site gave an overview on what happens in domestic abuse families. It outlines the different situations and reasons for it occurring. There is a section regarding “Power and Control” which outlines why people need to have authority over others. It also outlines the different stages and emotions that both the inflictor and victim go through. It gives advice on how to stop the abuse and what to do next.. I thought this website would be very helpful for families going through this issue and it gives a good insight as to what to expect and how to deal with the outcomes..

WEEK 9

Week 9
Part 1
This week we were asked to look at 2 websites and record some strategies that should be used when accessing websites...

You need to ask questions when looking at sites to see if the site is really going to help you...
Ask the following questions:
Make sure you are in the right place.
Does this site address the topic you are researching? Was the page worth visiting?

When in doubt, doubt.
Do you have good reason to believe that the information on the site is accurate? Do authors provide any supportive evidence for their conclusions?

Consider the source.
Who are the authors of the Web page? What gives them their authority or expertise to write? Who is responsible for the site? Is this a commercial, governmental, personal, or academic Web site?

Know what's happening.
What is the purpose of the site? Is the main purpose to inform, to persuade, or to sell you something? Do you understand what is being said? What do you think has not been said that should be addressed?

Look at details.
Is the site well organized? Are there misspelled words or examples of poor grammar? Do the links work? Do they send you beyond the site to other reliable sources of information? Does the site offer anything unique or does it tell you little more than you could find in an encyclopedia? Are the graphics on the page clear and helpful or distracting and confusing? What opinions do others have about the Web page?

Distinguish Web pages from pages found on the Web.
Do you think this page was designed for the Web, or do you think it was originally something else? If it was originally something else, what something else was it?

Part 2

We were asked to evaluate two of the websites given to us on http://www.ithaca.edu/library/training/think60.html

The first website I chose was “The Psychedelic 60’s” http://www.lib.virginia.edu/small/exhibits/sixties/index.html

• There are dates on this site to notify the date the website was created and last updated
• The authors and creators are acknowledged and the site is copyrighted
• There are no links to give any information about the author or sponsor.
• There is no information regarding the credentials or qualifications of the author, as this site was created by a university.
• The purpose of this site is to educate regarding the 1960’s and the activities and daily life of people during that time.
• The site is set out really appropriately. With bright colours and lots of pictures. There is also a great deal of information. However, the authors of these articles are not acknowledged and while there is sometimes references made regarding the sources, a majority of the articles do not have references.
• Overall, this site seems rather genuine when reading the articles. However due to the fact that references are not constant throughout the site, it is hard to tell whether the information on this site is accurate or not.

The next website I chose was “The Almost Great Society: the 1960’s”
http://us.history.wisc.edu/hist102/lectures/lecture27.html

Instantly I can tell that this site is rather genuine..
• There is a date to notify when the site was created
• The author’s are university lecturers and professors; however I cannot see any links to give information regarding their credentials or qualifications.
• The purpose of this site (as it is a copy of a lecture for university students) is to educate regarding the 1960’s. As the previous site was more regarding the social aspects, this site relates to the political aspects of the 1960’s.
• This site is set out in a more formal manner. There are some pictures to indicate the important figures during the 1960’s but the majority of this site is textual information. There is a great usage of quotes and themes during the time which appear to be very relevant. The site is set out in an easy to understand format with dot points and headings all throughout.
• References are constantly made regarding the information found and used.
• Overall, this site is very genuine from what I have gathered. Because it apparently was written by university professors there should not be much doubt. However the fact that information regarding the professors is not given, the information may still be unreliable.

WEEK 8

LECTURE:

Today's lecture was all about how to give a good presentation, it was also about how to give a BAD presentation. Because we are brought up in a technoligy based generation, people seem to go a bit crazy when it comes to given a presentation and using technoligy to back it up. therefore the lecture gave us notes on bad presentations. for example, dont use different fonts for each slide, this is not professional, it makes it look immature, same with using different colour design. pick one and stick to it. Deffinatly dont use the animation sounds etc. Make sure you dont clutter your slides, a cluttered slide jsut makes it look like you dont know what your talking about so you have put everything onto the slide.

The lecture went on to explain more tips on how to give a good presentation. to keep us interested their was a video of a stand up comedian, talking about presentations on powerpoint. this was entertaining and caught our attension, it made us realise how much people overuse slide shows.

As a group, we then discussed what the top 10 most important things we should know about using powerpoint effectively.

At the end we jsut summed up teh important factors that were discussed in the lecture. we all agreed that now we had a better understanding of what was expected of us in our oral presentation.

This week's tutorial, is all about Presentations!! Because we have a presentation to give in a couple of weeks, we are to give 5 handy tips, on how to give a good presentation.

we used this website to help us with our presentation:

http://www.personal.psu.edu/uxg3/blogs/undergraduateresearch/2008/02/online-resources-for-how-to-pr.html

Here are five handy tips!

1. Practise- this is one of the more important tips i extracted from this link: http://webhost.bridgew.edu/jhayesboh/NOT13TH/presentations.HTM

i think this is one of the most important tips, if you have rehearsed what you want to say, your point will come accross to the audeince more effectively.

2. Speak clearly: Make sure you speak loud, and clear. There is nothign worse than listening to a speaker, who is mumbling under their breath. so make sure your head is up, your not jsut reading off notes all teh time, and your loud, so the audience stays in tune.

3. Respect your Audience: do not simplify your information TO much, if you act like the audience is dumb, you will not gain respect. of course you must have a target audience, and change your presentation to suit the audience.

4. Have a Main theme: Try and base your presentation on one main theme. this idea was extracted from this link: http://lasi.lynchburg.edu/benson_k/public/writing/oral.html

make sure that you branch off the idea, but keep comming back to the initial idea.

5. Be Prepared: The worst thing for a presentation, is when you are not prepared at all. make sure you research your topic from all angles (expecially if questions are allowed to be asked following your speach). a well researched speech, is a good speech.

Our second task for today's workshop was to construct a powerpoint slide show, using our ideas on how to give a presentation. we were to include screen shots of each completed slide:

Slide one:

Slide two:

Slide three:

slide four:

slide five:

slide six:

slide saven:

WEEK 7

This week's lecture was about EndNote. The lecturer talked about what EndNote was, How to use it and why it was useful. EndNote is a database that is used to reference citations, references and bibliographies. The useful thing about using EngNote is that all your references can be kept together and can be tracked down if you ever need to use any of your references.
This week's workshop activities were to go to review the online referencing guide and include 5 different types of references. The second task was to go to blackboard and complete the "EndNote v11 Exercises for Vista" exercise. The third task was to open and save a copy of "Cite while you write EndNote Exercise". We then have to use the EndNote library that we have created to complete the tasks in Italics. We had to include a screen shot of the EndNote file and document.

There are many references that are used but some references are used more than other ones. These include Articles, Web Pages, Books, E-mails etc... The references that I chose are Magazine Article, Web Page, Books, Ebooks and Online Articles.

Magazine Article:
Jennings, P. (1995, January 14). The national front. The West Australian [The West Magazine], 8-12.

Web Page:
Technical specifications (iPhone). [n.d.] Retrieved November, 2007, from Apple: http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html

Books:
Moore, T. I. (1971). Social patterns in Australian literature. Sydney: Angus & Robertson.

Ebooks:
Wilkinson, R., & Marmot, M. (Eds.). (2003). Social determinants of health: The solid facts (2nd ed.). Retrieved December 2, 2007, from http://www.euro.who.int/document/e81384.pdf

Online Article:
Fredrickson, B. L. (2000, March 7). Cultivating positive emotions to optimise health and well-being. Prevention & Treatment, 3, Article 0001a. Retrieved November 20, 2000, from http://journals.apa.org/prevention/volume3/pre0030001a.html

The Cite while you write exercise was a bit confusing but I got it in the end. The confusing part was trying to insert the citations into the document but in the end it seemed simple because the way I was doing it before was wrong. I later found the right way to do it and therefore it was easy. The screen shots above show how well the creation of the EndNote was.

WEEK 6

Today's lecture was about searching and finding quality information on the World-Wide Web. The lecturer talked about the context of the World-Wide Web, The equality of the World-Wide Web, Evaluating Information Quality (IQ) on the WWW, Tips that can be used to find quality sites and then talked about the group assignment.

This week's workshop tasks were to go to ICYouSee page and read the strategies that they have for evaluating the information found on websites. We then had to describe what those strategies are and compare them to the "INCO 48" Web page and the "Good, the Bad and the Ugly' Web page and see if there are any other tips that you can find. The other task is to go to the "Reliving the Sixties: a Web Site Evaluation Assignment" exercise and look through all 5 of the topics and we had to choose 2 of which we were to evaluate using the criteria ACCURACY, AUTHORITY, PURPOSE, DETAIL & DESIGN and OVERALL WORTH.

When i went to the ICYouSee site, there were six suggestions that were offered when examining Web pages. Those six suggestions are: Make sure you are in the 'Right Place', When in doubt, doubt, Consider the source, Know what's happening, Look at details and Distinguish Web pages from pages found on the Web. Besides these six suggestions there are also certain criteria that should be used. They are: Authority - Who are the authors of the Web page or what gives them their authority?, Accuracy - Is the site accurate or are the Facts real?, Objectivity - What's the purpose of the site?, Currency - Has the site been kept up-to-date?, Coverage - Is the information the right one that you are looking for? AND Value - Was the information that you found useful? Below is the link to the site.
http://www.ithaca.edu/library/training/think.html

INCO 48 had the same tips and suggestions as ICYouSee but there were just a bit of extra tips.
The tips are the 'The Ten C's for Evaluating Internet Sources and they are: Content, Credibility, Critical Thinkin, Copyright, Citiation, Continuity, Censorship, Connectivity, Comparability and Context. The Definitions of the ten C's basically define themselves like 'Content' for instance; is this would be is the wether the content is good and is it reliable? If it is still not clear then you can go to the site itself for a better understanding. http://www.taftcollege.edu/newTC/Academic/INCO48/sec6-4.htm

Good, the Bad and the Ugly also had the same tips as ICYouSee but they expanded the definitions of the tips. They went into more detail about the Authority, Accuracy, Objectivity, Currency and Coverage but they left out Value. I think that the detail that this page presented gave a better definitions of the criteria and made it more understandable for the public. If you would like more information on the site, here is the link to the site. http://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/evalcrit.html

WEEK 5

Lecture:

There are three different categories of information on the Web:
1. The Free, Visible Web.
2. The Free, Invisible Web.
3. Paid Databases over the Web.
Two categories the search engine fall into:
1. Search Engines
2. Directories

A web search engine is a web-based application (program) that crawls the internet.
E.g.
1. Google www.google.com
2. Yahoo! www.yahoo.com
3. AltaVista www.altavista.com
4. AlltheWeb www.alltheweb.com

*The disadvantage of the search engine is that it comes up with so much things which you have to look for to find what you want.

These are some of the most used search engine:

Tutorial
1. www.haggishunt.scot
* This web talk about hunting season and it has nothing that's useful
2. www.molossia.orgsman.com
* It talk about a country that I have never red heard of.
* It also says what's going to happen e.g. when who's visiting.
2) On the Martin Luther King web I think that I would find a useful info. about what he did in his life and how he changed the black America's history and also how he was killed and who was involved.

3) My first impression of the web (http://www.martinlutherking.org/) is that it is well researched and allots of time spent on the web and allot of effort put into it.

4) I don't think that the web (http://www.martinlutherking.org/)is very useful cause doesn't actual tell you much about Martin Luther king and it also talks about the US more than the King.

WEEK 3

lecture summary:
The third lecture was an introduction to the online ECU library resources and databases. The lecture brief functions of this particular website, for example students can access the website at any time to look for a specific book, article and other resource.
Other links which have been discussed in the lecture are the links that makes up the website, such as online tips and previews of academic essays and other academic writing resources which students can use to improve their writing skill and knowledge.
Tutorial:
the ten useful tips or functions which i had found from using the online ECU library ste are:
Students can login their accounts
Browsing work that belonged to other students for more study examples.
Helps students look for books concerning their assignments
the website allows students and staff to make web searches for an assessment
tips on how to write blogs, journals and essays at the required university level
online referencing guide
the online link of how to write successful reports
one of the important functions of this website is that students can book equipments from the library

tips on organising assignments
the academic tips on exams
the online ECU library allows the enrolled students to access their accounts so that if the student wants to save any specific resource, for example a book or an article it gets saved to their accounts.
some students find it easier to study for their exams by looking back at the pervious exam, this way the student would have an idea of the type questions that might show up on the exam.
the online library website can be an easier way for students to find the book they're looking for rather than walking throughout the whole library trying to find one book. So the website makes it easier all what is required is to print the name of the book and start browsing.
like other search engines the website also performs the task of any other search engine, where someone can write a key word and browse through out the results.
the website offers tips for students who are not familiar with academic writing. The website gives a step by step procedure on how to write papers such as Logs, Journals, and Essays.
I think one of the most important functions of this website is that an authorised person can book equipments from the library online and save whatever they booked
like those tips on writing essays and other, the online referencing guide is another helpful tip which students can use to help them reference their work better.
most assignments in university is linked with writing reports, the online library website shows how and what required from the student to write a report successfully.

Reading 1:
‘Finding what you want on the web’ by Bill Thompson\
This reading is about the use of different search engines in finding information. The writer talks about the difficulty in search for documents on the web because of the lack or organization.
Reading 2:
‘Bare Bones Lesson 7: Basic Search Tips’
This website is about search tips. The search tips are for search engines. Using Boolean operators and + and – in search, it is easy to find information. This narrows the search to exactly what you want. I found this helpful when searching because it lets me search files directly linked to my subjects. I do not have to waste time searching through sites that offer no information about my topic.
